Benburb Castle is dramatically sited on the cliff edge above the River Blackwater in the grounds of Benburb’s Servite Priory.
This castle has been at Benburb, in different forms, from approximately the 1550s. Known locally as Shane’s Castle, it was first associated with Irish chieftain Shane O’Neill. Shane belonged to the great O’Neill Dynasty of Ulster.
After the Plantation of Ulster, the English Wingfield family took ownership of the castle. With the arrival of the Servite community in 1949, it was integrated into Priory life. It bears a quiet testimony to the rich history of Benburb and the surrounding area.
The north-west tower has been re-roofed and restored. Much effort has been made to preserve this unique local treasure.
Benburb Castle is open to groups for tours. This tour can also be booked as part of a package. Please send your enquiry to info@benburbpriory.com
