In Pictures: Benburb Priory unfurls gates for annual Pumpkin Patch event
Posted On: October 19, 2025
The historic Benburb Priory unfurled its gates this weekend to welcome visitors to the launch of its annual Pumpkin Patch at the Priory event, marking the beginning of a weekend — and for the next two weekends ahead the historcial manor house will be filled with seasonal festivities, family entertainment, and a touch of Halloween mystery.
Families from across Mid-Ulster gathered on the Priory grounds to take part in the opening day’s activities, which featured pumpkin picking, autumn-themed displays, and guided tours of the Priory’s storied basement. The day’s highlight for many of the younger visitors was meeting Mr Bruce, the Priory’s resident pumpkin patch host, who greeted children among the pumpkins before leading groups on an atmospheric tour of the Priory’s spooky basement.
The basement tour, complete with dim lighting and ghostly tales, offered visitors a glimpse into the building’s past and the legends that surround it.
A Historic Setting
Benburb Priory, which stands proudly overlooking the River Blackwater, dates back to the 19th century and has long been a landmark of local heritage. Originally built by Mr James Bruce, a respected landowner and philanthropist, the estate once served as the Bruce family home before later becoming a religious retreat and community centre.
Mr Bruce’s influence remains woven into the fabric of the Priory’s history. Known for his generosity and deep connection to the local area, he contributed significantly to the development of the Benburb estate during his lifetime. Local tradition holds that his presence still lingers in the halls — a fitting guardian, perhaps, for the Priory’s Halloween celebrations.
