A place of peace and remembrance: Plans for a Columbarium Wall at Benburb Priory
Posted On: October 4, 2025
The Servite Community, together with the Board of Benburb Priory, is exploring the development of a Columbarium Wall as part of a serene prayer and reflection garden within the Priory grounds.
This thoughtful addition would offer a dignified and spiritual resting place for cremated remains, while enhancing the peaceful and reflective atmosphere that makes Benburb Priory so special.
What Is a Columbarium?
A columbarium is a specially designed wall that contains individual niches for cremated remains. Each niche provides a secure and respectful resting place, often marked with a nameplate or memorial plaque.
As cemetery spaces become increasingly limited, many families are seeking alternative ways to honour their loved ones. Columbarium walls provide a sustainable and meaningful option, allowing people to keep their loved ones’ remains in a sacred, accessible location.

Meeting a Growing Need in Our Community
Across Ireland and beyond, families are finding it more and more difficult to find suitable burial spaces. Facilities for ashes are often scarce or located far from home.
A columbarium wall at Benburb Priory would meet this growing need—offering a beautiful, permanent, and peaceful place for remembrance.
Currently, only Servite Friars can be buried at Benburb. However, this new development would make it possible for those with a connection to Benburb, as well as friends and neighbours, to have their ashes interred in this sacred and welcoming setting.
A Place of Spirituality, Solitude, and Community
Benburb Priory has long been a place of spiritual renewal and reflection, drawing visitors from near and far. The proposed prayer and reflection garden—featuring the columbarium wall—would provide a new opportunity for visitors to find peace, connection, and comfort amidst the natural beauty and spiritual presence of the Priory.
This project reflects the Servite Community’s ongoing commitment to hospitality, remembrance, and service, ensuring that Benburb continues to be a place of welcome for all.
