Benburb Priory Library announces 2025–2026 Cultural and Literary Talks

Benburb Priory Library has unveiled its new series of Cultural and Literary Talks, running from September 2025 through April 2026. This much-anticipated programme celebrates some of Ireland’s most iconic poets, writers, and cultural voices, while bringing together acclaimed speakers, musicians, and historians to explore their lasting influence.

The series promises to be a highlight for lovers of Irish literature, history, and culture, offering a unique opportunity to experience thought-provoking lectures, live music, and engaging discussions in the historic surroundings of Benburb Priory.


Programme Highlights

Thursday 18th September 2025 – Percy French

The season opens with a focus on Percy French, one of Ireland’s most beloved songwriters, entertainers, and painters. Lila Jackson will deliver an insightful talk on French’s cultural legacy, with live musical performances from Tom Sweeney, bringing French’s timeless songs to life.

Thursday 9th October 2025 – MJ Murphy

Kevin Murphy will present on MJ Murphy, exploring his writings, influence, and unique voice in Irish literature. This evening promises to deepen appreciation for Murphy’s lesser-known but significant contributions.

Thursday 13th November 2025 – Benedict Kiely

Celebrated Irish novelist and short-story writer Benedict Kiely takes centre stage in November. Tom Sweeney returns as speaker, tracing Kiely’s literary journey, his themes of rural Ireland, and his place in the canon of 20th-century Irish writing.

Thursday 26th February 2026 – Charlie Donnelly: Portrait of a Poet

The first talk of 2026 focuses on Charlie Donnelly, poet and activist remembered for his role in the Spanish Civil War. Eileen Quinn will present Portrait of a Poet, offering insight into Donnelly’s life, his political convictions, and his poetry that continues to resonate with modern audiences.

Thursday 12th March 2026 – Ethna Carberry

James Kane will speak about Ethna Carberry, a prominent poet and and Journalist whose lyrical works capture both personal and political dimensions of late 19th-century Ireland. This talk will highlight her influence on Irish women’s writing and cultural identity.

Thursday April 2026 – Joseph Campbell (Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil)

The series concludes with an exploration of Joseph Campbell (Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil), poet and lyricist known for penning “My Lagan Love.” Roland Spottiswoode will guide the audience through Campbell’s legacy, blending biography with a celebration of his poetic achievements.
